St Nessan's Primary School

St Nessan's National School is responsible for the education of over seven hundred children. They have a dedicated staff of forty-one teachers led by principal Marie McKeogh. The great tradition of learning in Mungret is continued within the walls of a modern well-equipped building providing the children with a broad, child-centred education. The school ethos is: “We foster the spiritual, moral, intellectual, social and cultural development of pupils”. To this end, St Nessan's is renowned as a great seat of education, fostering in the children a desire to learn, a sense of self-esteem and the motivation to apply themselves in worthwhile and satisfying activities while enabling the children to achieve their full potential.

Their Primary School Curriculum is laid out in seven curricular areas, consisting of twelve subjects in all. Language (English and Gaeilge); Mathematics; Geography; Science; Visual Arts; Music; Drama; PE; SPHE and Religion. There is also great emphasis placed on key areas of numeracy and literacy and education of pupils in these areas is greatly enhanced by the provision of additional teachers to supplement class teaching. St Nessan's NS is also part of the Department of Education and Science Pilot Programmme on Modern Language. Fifth and Sixth Classes receive 90 minutes tuition in Spanish each week.

Pupils with special educational needs have access to their special education teachers who work in close co-operation with class teachers. An ESL teacher caters for the needs of pupils for whom English is a second language.

St Nessan's NS pupils have done themselves proud not only in class but on the field and in the pool with many successful competitions under their belts. Pupils in St Nessan's NS have an active sporting life participating in swimming, basketball, Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, hockey and tennis.

They also have specialist teachers to teach Irish dancing, recorder and swimming to pupils in middle and senior standards. Extra-curricular activities such as speech and drama, chess, modern dance, Irish dancing, Guides, Brownies, Ladybirds and a Youth Club are also offered.
